Do you like to exercise, but not hit the gym? Wish you could afford a personal trainer to come to your house every day, but it’s just not in your budget? The answer can be as simple as looking at yourself in a mirror… well, a smart mirror.
Smart mirrors have technology that allows you to stream exercise classes and get feedback on your form. Some may even count your reps for you. While some mirrors hang on your wall, others are attached to furniture or double as storage for workout equipment.
Healthline tried Tempo Studio and Nordictrack Vault – two of the most popular smart mirrors – to help you decide which device is best for your home gym.
While both are stylish, there was clearly a winner. Read on to find out which smart mirror reigned supreme.
Here’s a quick look at each smart mirror.
The NordicTrack Vault prides itself on its sleek and modern appearance.
Unlike many other smart mirrors, the Vault is a stand-alone device with a large touchscreen mirror that opens to reveal storage space for training equipment.
The Vault is powered by iFit, allowing you to stream trainer-led workouts on demand.
When purchasing the safe, you can opt for the stand-alone model or the full safe, which includes accessories like dumbbells, kettlebells, and resistance bands.
The Tempo Studio is a workout cabinet with a large touchscreen mirror in the front and storage space in the back.
It also includes a cabinet area under the mirror for storing small exercise items like weight plates and dumbbells.
Using the Tempo Fit app, Tempo offers live, on-demand, trainer-led classes.
The device is also equipped with 3D sensors and a camera, which provide real-time fitness feedback and weight load recommendations during workouts.
The Tempo Studio comes in three packages – Standard, Plus and Pro – which vary in terms of price and included accessories.
Now that you know the basics, let’s take a closer look at the price and feature comparison.
Size and design
The Vault and Tempo both occupy similar space, although the Vault has a more elegant overall design.
That said, the diversity of the Tempo’s storage options sets it apart. We also loved that the Tempo can hold a folded squat rack.
Here are the dimensions of each product:
- To jump: 72.65 inches high × 24.25 inches wide × 14 inches deep (184.3 × 61.6 × 35.56 cm)
- Tempo: 72 inches high × 26 inches wide × 16 inches deep (182.9 × 66 × 40.6 cm)
Winner: To attach. While we loved the amount of gear the Tempo could store, the Vault has a sleeker design.
Display screen and speakers
The Vault and Tempo both offer nice touchscreens, although the Tempo’s screen is 10 inches (25.4 cm) larger, measuring 42 inches (106.7 cm).
In addition to a larger screen, the Tempo offers a better sound experience, with 60-watt stereo speakers, compared to the Vault’s 3-inch (7.6 cm) digitally amplified speakers.
Winner: Tempo Studio
As with other NordicTrack machines, the Vault is powered by iFit, although it’s important to note that it does not provide access to iFit’s full library of on-demand classes. You also cannot stream live lessons using the vault.
Currently, the Vault offers 158 classes, including:
- cross out
- strength training
- sculpt and tone
- training camp
Tempo Studio requires a Tempo Fit subscription, which provides access to live and on-demand workouts.
While the app offers high-intensity interval training (HIIT), mobility, yoga, and cardio-boxing classes, the majority of the content focuses on strength training.
Winner: To attach. With its wide variety of classes, iFit is the best choice if you want to vary your workout every day. However, the Tempo Fit app is a better option if your primary goal is strength training.
Additional training features
Using its 3D sensors, Tempo offers shape corrections and even keeps track of your repetitions. It also recommends how much weight you should lift based on your fitness goals, past performance, and form.
However, the Vault is not equipped with the same level of technology. Instead, it just has a reflective surface, so you can keep an eye on your form during class.
Winner: Tempo Studio

Here are the current membership rates:
- IFit family plan: $ 39 per month or $ 396 per year
- IFit individual package: $ 180 per year
- Tempo Fit family package: $ 39 per month
Keep in mind that the safe also comes with a free 1-year iFit family subscription.
Winner: NordicTrack Vault
Guarantee and return policy
The Tempo Studio Home Gym comes with a 3 year limited warranty. There is also a 30 day return window.
In comparison, the Vault has a more extensive warranty:
- 10 year executive
- 2 year coins
- 1 year of labor
Like the Tempo Studio, the Vault offers a 30-day return policy, although there is a $ 250 return fee and restocking fee, which is 10% of the purchase price.
Winner: The NordicTrack Vault, but if you’re worried about having to return your device, the Tempo Studio has a better return policy.
The NordicTrack Vault and Tempo Studio are sleek smart mirrors with storage space for exercise equipment and large touch screens for streaming trainer-led exercise classes.
However, after trying both mirrors, Tempo Studio comes out on top for providing the best overall value.
Specifically, Tempo’s live commentary and personalized weight recommendations make it a truly unique home gym solution. In addition, the Tempo also offers more storage space, more weight training accessories and better sound quality.
Additionally, Tempo Fit provides access to live lessons, a feature that is not offered on Vault.
That said, the NordicTrack Vault is cheaper and may be a better option if you already have some strength training equipment.
Plus, if you already own an iFit-powered machine, the Vault will save you money, as you won’t have to purchase an additional membership to a fitness program.
The NordicTrack Vault and Tempo Studio are two of the most popular smart mirrors on the market.
While both allow you to enjoy trainer-led workouts from the comfort of your home, we’ve found that the Tempo Studio offers better overall value thanks to its advanced technology and the number of included strength training accessories.
However, there’s no denying that the Vault is a sleeker device, ideal for people who already have an iFit membership or own their own weightlifting equipment.
Whatever mirror you purchase, be sure to speak to a healthcare practitioner before making any changes to your exercise routine.
