Jehan Daruvala lands his first podium in Monaco

Indian Jehan Daruvala scored his fourth podium of the Formula 2 season with a second place on the iconic Monaco street circuit.

The 23-year-old clinched the historic result, his 11th Formula 2 podium, in Saturday’s sprint race.

The Prema Racing driver lined up third on the grid. He managed a good breakaway but had to take evasive action to dodge pole sitter Jake Hughes, allowing teammate Dennis Hauger to take the lead.

Jehan placed second and continued but failed to find a way through the winding streets of the Principality, known to be difficult to pass, with the top six, except for Hughes, finishing in order in which they started.

Still, Jehan claimed his maiden podium in Monaco, with the Red Bull-backed rider heading to the hallowed Royal Box to collect his trophy.

Jehan followed up his sprint podium with a strong finish in Sunday’s feature race.

He started 8th but got stuck in the wall at the start.

He opted for a strategy similar to the one he used in Saudi Arabia, where he went from 14th to 3rd place, choosing to start with the softer tire and stop early.

But an untimely safety car allowed those racing further up the peloton to pit ‘free’. This deprived drivers like Jehan, who had pitted early and was closing the gap to rivals due to return later, the chance to pass them through the stops.

Still, Jehan once again showed his racing sense and made up for it with a perfectly timed dive inside Calan Williams at the Tabac corner. He finished eighth.

“Achieving the podium in Monaco is a dream come true for any driver. It would have been great to win the race, but overtaking here is never easy.

“I’m really happy with the pace we had this weekend – we were as quick as anyone else. The cross-country run was pretty straightforward, but I managed to get a good move, it was fun,” said Jehan.

Jehan, three-time winner in Formula 2, remains third in the overall drivers’ classification.

The next race is in two weeks in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, another tough street circuit.
