Benas wins CGA Rookie of the Year

NORMAN – Oklahoma Men’s Gymnastics Freshman Fuzzy Benas earned the Collegiate Gymnastics Association (CGA) Rookie of the Year award, the organization announced Thursday.

He has won twelve team-leading individual event titles on floor, horizontal rings, vault, parallel bars and all-around throughout the 2021-22 season.

Benas holds the team’s top score in fixed rings (14.200), vault (15.000), parallel bars (14.750) and all-around (84.500).

He recorded season-record scores on floor (14.200), pommel horse (13.800) and high bar (13.750).

Benas has scored over 14.150 on vault in all eight encounters on the 2021-22 roster.

He scored 83.800 in all-around in his first competition of the year at the Rocky Mountain Open, earning CGA Gymnast of the Week, CGA Rookie of the Week, and MPSF Gymnast of the Week honors.

Benas continued to grow throughout the season, posting an 84.500 all-around score in the Sooners’ senior night win over California and a second-place finish (84.700) in the all-around at the MPSF Championship.

The freshman earned four regular-season All-America honors (VT, PB, SR, AA), which were tied for most in the NCAA this year.
