4x100m relay secures podium as FSU men’s team finishes national championships

EUGENE, Oregon – The Florida State Men’s Track and Field Championships concluded the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. With 23.5 points. Five men closed the game with All-America first-team honors and the Seminoles finished 10e in the team classification.

“A courageous effort on the part of the men,” said head coach Bob Braman. “We left everything behind, we just have to find a way to stay healthy in the final. The top 10 ranking at the national championship is something to be proud of. Proud of everyone’s work, of our coaches and support staff. Going up to the Top 10 is a step forward.

Florida State opened the day on the track with a third place on the podium in the 4x100m relay. The team of Taylor Banks, Kasaun James, Don’drea Swint and Jo’Vaughn Martin recorded a season best time of 38.60 to win their bronze medals at the NCAA Championships. The quartet were also the first Noles to receive All-America First Team honors that day.

After the relay, Martin took a quick break before returning to the track to compete in the 100 meters. Next to Martin was Banks as he competed in his first individual outdoor national competition final. Despite the slow start, Martin rose to the top to register a fourth place of 10.12 and a second All-American First Team honor. Banks suffered a hamstring injury halfway through the race, but managed to finish eighth overall and America’s first all-team with a time of 10.35.

Meanwhile, Jordan Wesner was competing in the high jump. In his last domestic meeting, the senior netted 2.20 meters for eighth place and the All-America first-team honors to close his college career.

Back on the track, Martin lined up for his third and final race of the day in the 200-meter race. The Houston, Texas native clocked 20.96 to place seventh overall, earning his third All-America First Team honor.

The action continues on Saturday from Eugene as the women advance to the final rounds to close the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
