Proprietary

Proprietary software is software that is owned by someone, and restricts the rights of others to use it. For example, proprietary software may restrict the rights of someone to redistribute it, to copy and install multiple versions of it, to copy and backup the software, any combination of the three, and many other ways rights to use proprietary software may be restricted.

Proprietary is not the same as closed source, but many proprietary programs are closed source to prevent people from violating the copyright license of the software. A program can be open source while also being proprietary, and it can also be closed source, while being non-proprietary. Neither case often occurs because it is difficult not to restrict the rights of owners of software while being closed source, and there is generally no reason for a proprietary program to be open source.
