Markup language

A markup language is a computer language that combines text and information about that text. The most well known markup language in existence is HTML, which is used, alongside its XML-based derivative XHTML, as the primary language for authorship and layout of web pages.

Today, markup languages are applied in several situations, such as user interfaces, vector graphics, content syndication and page description.
