Codecs
From TheLinuxVault
Related How-to's:
"Codec" is a contraction of enCODer/DECoder. Codecs are pieces of software that are used to encode and decode information, such as audio, video, or graphics, from one form, such as raw data to and from an other form, such as compressed or encrypted.
A codec is not the same as a format. For example, Xvid is a codec, but it is not a format. .mp4 is a format, or container, that may contain a file in Xvid format.
